Some time before 1806, three Cooper brothers, Ephraim, Lewis, and Silas, moved from Newark
NJ to Savannah. Ephraim married Lydia Gugel, and Lewis married Lydia’s sister Salome. Silas was
a “painter and gilder” and furniture merchant, who brought unfinished furniture from New York,
which he painted and sold. Lewis and Salome moved to Augusta, where he and a partner built a
toll bridge across the Savannah River- the only one across the Savannah at that time- which
survived until the 1880’s. Ephriam appears to have been a firewood merchant, with his house and
business on Bay Street.
Two of their sons died young, within a few weeks of each other, in 1811. Ephraim himself died at an early age, as did both his brothers.
After Ephraim’s death, Lydia went to live with her daughter and son-in-law, William and Julia
Remshart, at their home on Remshart Row.
