George Langley first appears in Georgia records in 1748, when he requests a grant of a town lot in Abercorn, a new town north of Savannah, in Effingham County. Because “he, having served his time in the colony, and always looked on as an industrious person”, the lot was granted. In 1750 he is one of a group of Abercorn residents complaining to the government about their poor situation. In December of 1754 he appears at Stoney Creek Church, in Pogotaligo SC, marrying Margaret Stirling. Given the age of at least one of his sons, Nathaniel, in 1770, this must be a second marriage. During the 1760’s he accumulates multiple tracts of land in Beaufort and Colleton Counties SC, so we must conclude that he moved to South Carolina in the 1750’s when the unsuitableness of Abercorn became apparent.

There are no records of George’s origins, but given the coincidences of names (George, Nathaniel, Samuel), it is likely that he is a member of the Norfolk, Virginia Langley family. There are several Georges born into that family who could be our George.
