Joseph was the son of Thomas Fry, who came to New England sometime prior to 1669. Thomas lived first in Newport. In 1677, he and 47 others were granted 5000 acres of crown land to found the town of East Greenwich. The oft-repeated claim that Thomas came from Yarte, Devonshire, and was the son of John Fry, the regicide Judge of Charles I, appears to be spurious. Like his father, Joseph was a glazier. He lived his entire life in East Greenwich, RI, where he as Deputy, Justice of the Peace, and Member and Clerk of the Rhode Island Assembly.
