There are very few records of the Gugels.  Johann Christoph’s father Johann- a shoemaker- and uncle Matthias arrived from Germany on the Charles Town Galley in 1749, as indentured servants. At some point Johann Christoph and his wife Maria moved to Savannah. His occupation is unknown, but he was apparently successful, as Savannah tax records show that he owned multiple properties in the city.
