John inherited his father’s farm in Wickford, North Kingston, and spent the remainder of his life there. He was a member of the local militia, rising from Ensign, to Lieutenant to Captain, and help a number of local positions For some years in the late 17th and early 18th centuries he was one of the twelve members of the Governor’s Council (one of the so-called “Assistants”).
John is buried in the Eldred Cemetery, which is now part of the Elm Grove Cemetery in North Kingston. This location was once part of the Eldred homestead. His wife, Margaret, and his parents are presumed to be buried here as well, but many of the gravestones are no longer legible.
