John was born in Branford shortly before his parents moved to Newark NJ. His father, also John, was one of the founders of Branford, but of unknown origin. In Newark, he became known as “Captain John Morris”, took a large role in the community and served as Sheriff of Essex County. He and his wife were both buried in the Old Burial Ground. In the late 1800’s, all of the early graves and grave markers- including John and Sarah’s- were moved to a crypt underneath a monument to the early settlers of Newark, in Fairmont Cemetery.
Note: No record exists of the marriage of John Morris and Sarah Crane. That Sarah Crane was Sarah, the wife of John Morris is shown by the will of Samuel Rose, whose reference to his “cousin Sarah Morris” can only be understood if Sarah, daughter of John Crane, was John’s wife.
