    Joseph, his father and his three brothers came to Georgia on the Charles Town Galley in 1749 as part of a group of about 70 Germans. Most of the group, including the Schubdreins, could not pay their own way and came as indentured servants. Joseph and one brother, both carpenters, were servants of the minister Bartholomew  Zouberbuhler, but the Ebenezer pastor, John Bolzius, bought their freedom for £6 each shortly after they arrived.


Maria was Joseph’s second wife, the first being Margaretha, daughter of Thomas and Sibylla  Geschwandel, who were pleased to have as a son-in-law…
