Randall was a ship’s captain, and had command of a ship that helped transport troops for the abortive 1746 invasion of Canada. Family documents suggest that he may, like most Rhode Island ship’s captains, have been involved in the slave trade. Such an occupation would have naturally brought him to Charleston SC, the main port of entry for slaves, where his son later lived. He apparently died before 1782, when he was no longer included in the Newport census.
The following is from Rhode Island state records:
IT is Voted and Resolved That Ninety four Pound ten Shillings in the Paper Currency of this State be allowed and paid out of the General Treasury to Mr Jonathan Almy it being in full for the Rent of the Dower of the Widow of Randall Eldred in a House in Newport from March 1 AD 1788 to September 1 AD 1789
In the death notice of his widow Freelove (Newport Mercury 4/1/1800) she is described as “widow of Randall Eldred, formerly of this town.”
Freelove was named after her mother’s aunt, Elizabeth Wilbur, who married Morris Freelove.
