John Remshart’s plantation was adjacent to that of James Bryan, Jane’s father. Later, he became a minister of the Methodist Episcopal Church, and preached for several decades until his voice failed. For 8 years he was a missionary among the slaves on the Georgia Sea Islands, where he was sent because he was one of the few who could speak the Gullah dialect of the islands.
During the civil war, the family was living in Savannah. When Sherman’s army was approaching in December of 1864, John, Jane, and two of their daughters, Mary Ewen and Isabelle fled to south Georgia, where they settled in what was to become Waycross. They took with them many of their possessions, carried on the backs of mules, including the dressing table that had belonged to John’s mother, Elizabeth Waldhauer Remshart.
